Waiting On Wednesday: Where’d You Go, Bernadette?

“Waiting on Wednesday”  is a weekly event, hosted by Jill at Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases that we’re really excited about.

Where’d You Go, Bernadette? by Maria Semple.
Due to be released August 14, 2012.

Where'd You Go, Bernadette: A Novel

Amazon says:   Bernadette Fox is notorious. To her Microsoft-guru husband, she’s a fearlessly opinionated partner; to fellow private-school mothers in Seattle, she’s a disgrace; to design mavens, she’s a revolutionary architect, and to 15-year-old Bee, she is a best friend and, simply, Mom.

Then Bernadette disappears. It began when Bee aced her report card and claimed her promised reward: a family trip to Antarctica. But Bernadette’s intensifying allergy to Seattle–and people in general–has made her so agoraphobic that a virtual assistant in India now runs her most basic errands. A trip to the end of the earth is problematic.

To find her mother, Bee compiles email messages, official documents, secret correspondence–creating a compulsively readable and touching novel about misplaced genius and a mother and daughter’s role in an absurd world.

The cover caught my attention, isn’t it fabulous? That’s not why I’m excited for it though. I’m a nosy person. It’s one of the many personality traits that make me an awesome librarian. I *like* looking for information and feeling like Sherlock Holmes. This is why genealogy is such a great hobby/source of fun money for me. Can’t find Aunt Frieda? I will. Or I’ll keep trying until I do. And.. who promises a trip to Antarctica for straight A’s? This could take a disturbing trip to my opinions on parenting and education and we just don’t want to go there. Let’s stick with the books. This one looks like it has potential. I’ve heard it described as a “beach read” though, so I’m not expecting anything really deep or meaningful.

What are you waiting on?
